Joseph William Cannon was born and raised in Watertown, Mass. He graduated from Boston College in 1953 with a master's in finance. Upon graduation, he entered the Army and was honorably discharged in 1956. Joseph then went to work for Northeast Airlines in Boston and New York as a research assistant. By the time he retired from the company, he was treasurer. He began a new job with Seaboard as treasurer. He left the airline industry in 1983 and bought the Town Crier Motel with his wife, Judith.
Joseph was the husband of Judith (McKeever) Cannon. He was the father of eight children: four daughters, Cecily Santoro, Patricia Fokas, Kathleen Cannon, and Mary Anne Cannon; four sons, George H. Cannon, Joseph W. Cannon Jr., John F. Cannon, and the late Michael J. Cannon; and grandfather of eight, Andrew, Eileen, Michael, Joey, Maddy, Bri, Joanie and Sofia.
