Capt. Bob Mangas was born in Defiance, Ohio. He attended Miami (of Ohio) University. After training as a Naval Aviation Cadet, he served as a pilot in the Naval Air Transport Service (NATS), flying R5Ds during World War II. He flew out allied prisoners who had been survivors of the Bataan death march.
Bob married Seaboard flight attendant Mary Jane Keller on June 21, 1972. She survives him, as does their son, Robert Jr. He is also survived by four children from his first marriage; sons Brian and David, and daughters Pamela and Karen.
