Capt. Joe Szaflarski was born February 3, 1914 to Karol and Alexandra K. Szaflarski in Chicago, Ill. After high school and short careers playing both semi-pro football and baseball, he attended New Mexico A&M for 2 years. In September, 1942, he joined the Army Air Corps, became a P-38 Lightning pilot, and flew 54 missions in northern Africa. After his tour of duty, Joe was stationed in New Castle, Del. where he met his future bride, Isabelle Barnes. On August 11, 1945, Joe and Isabelle were married and shared 58 years together. Upon his discharge from the Air Force as a Captain, he began a 30-year career with Seaboard World Airlines, where he was a captain and flew multiple aircraft culminating with the Boeing 747.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Jane (Bud) Bowley; sons, Joseph (Pinky), Dale (Linda), and Karl; and 6 grandchildren: Brian, Tracy, Karla, Krista, Kara, and Angie. He was predeceased by his wife, Isabelle; his parents, and 3 sisters.
